Books Thru Bars of Ithaca Mission

Books thru Bars of Ithaca, NY (BtB) is a volunteer-run, community-based, tax-exempt organization that sends books and other reading materials to prisoners free of charge throughout the country. It addresses the needs of a prison population, with little or no access to education and basic reading materials. BtB was founded in 2001 and modeled after other successfully run books in prisons programs.

Book mailing parlors are scheduled at a regular basis to read letters from prisoners and assemble and mail packages of donated books. Requests should describe the type of books desired as precisely as possible, and we will select a package of titles that match the request as closely as possible from available stock. Individual members can also come in at their own schedule to package books by following directions posted in the office.

BtB uses recycled and donated materials wherever possible. Its organizational structure is simple and transparent so that all who want to join and participate in the organization can do so right away. BtB has a strong interest in prison literacy and will share its resources and work with other individuals and organizations that promote literacy.

Some of the most popular requests of books by prisoners:
Spanish books
Koran, Bible
